Police in Luweero District have arrested two suspected members of a criminal gang believed to be behind a series of violent robberies and burglaries that have terrorized residents and businesses across the district.
The arrests followed intelligence-led operations conducted by the Territorial Police in Luweero, according to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twiineamazima.
The first suspect, Ssekandi Akim, alias “Kimiyoo,” was arrested on June 12, 2026. During interrogation, Ssekandi reportedly admitted involvement in several aggravated robberies, burglaries and thefts committed in different parts of the district.
Police investigations indicate that the gang targeted residents and businesses in Wobulenzi, Bombo, Kasana, Kiwoko and Luweero Town Councils, where victims were allegedly attacked with iron bars and stones before being robbed of cash and other valuables.
“These arrests are a significant breakthrough in our efforts to dismantle criminal gangs that have been causing insecurity within Luweero District,” said ASP Twiineamazima.
Following information obtained from Ssekandi, police mounted another operation in the Kawanda–Matugga area on June 23, 2026, leading to the arrest of a second suspect, Shaban Sserugga, alias “Dog City.”
Sserugga is currently detained at Luweero Police Station as investigations continue.
According to preliminary findings, the suspects allegedly travelled from Matugga to Luweero District, where they waylaid members of the public and robbed them after assaulting them with iron bars and paving stones.
“Our investigations show that the suspects operated across several areas and used violence to overpower their victims before stealing money and personal belongings,” Twiineamazima explained.
Police said several related incidents remain under investigation, with efforts ongoing to apprehend other members of the suspected criminal group who are still on the run.
Twiineamazima commended members of the public for sharing information that contributed to the arrests.
“We thank the community for cooperating with security agencies. Public vigilance and timely sharing of information are critical in fighting crime and ensuring the safety of our communities,” he said.
He urged anyone with information about the remaining suspects or related criminal activities to report to the nearest police station, assuring that all reports will be treated with confidentiality.
“We remain committed to ensuring that all those involved in these criminal acts are brought to justice,” he added.
Police say intelligence-led operations will continue in the district as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle violent criminal networks and improve public safety.
